StyleTap’s Palm OS emulator officially coming to iPhone and iPod touch

May 31, 2008

In a move of unsurprising proportions, StyleTap announced today that it will be bringing its Palm OS emulator to the iPhone and iPod touch… officially. This basically means that every one of those precious Palm apps you couldn’t live without will now be easily accessible via Apple’s devices, thus seriously threatening the argument for keeping your Treo 600. Gregory Sokoloff, CEO of the company, stated that the response to a video posted in February of a demo version of the software convinced them to take the plunge. Palm, now might be a good time to stun us with your new OS.

Thanks to Capcom and GameTrailers, there’s a brand spanking new “Captivate” Resident Evil 5 trailer that’s guaranteed to give you a satisfying dose of zombie killing and virus exposure. The RE5 trailer (viewable above) also shows plenty of in-game action, beautiful, gorgeous in-game action where, at one point, we swear we counted twenty-seven zombies on the screen at once. And a few infected dogs. There’s also a chick, man.

The iPhone Patent: Steven P. Jobs, Inventor

May 31, 2008

The US Patent and Trademark Office has revealed a mammoth document that can only be described as The iPhone Patent, a 371-page spectacular that covers Apple’s handheld multi-touch UI paradigm in excruciating detail. Many of the mocked-up screen shots depicted in the paperwork are dead ringers for screens that we’re well acquainted with in the production phone, while others represent ideas that either haven’t completed cooking or eventually found their way into the Cupertino circular file (follow the break for a picture of a home screen with dedicated “Blog” and dictionary apps, for instance).

The application also mentions “modules” for video conferencing, GPS, and other currently non-existent (though widely expected) functionality. And in case there’s any doubt over who was responsible for this compendium of legalese, industrial design, and technical diagrams, one only need look at the header of page 1: “Jobs et al.” Yep, Steve himself wasn’t the least bit shy about taking credit atop an entire column of company A-listers for inventing the iPhone’s trademark user interface, which we’re guessing came about from a mix of equal parts truth, ego, and ass-kissing from the legal department down the hall. Seriously though, if you’re Scott Forstall down there at number two on the Inventors list, what are you going to do — go boardroom showdown all John Sculley-style [Via Cellpassion]

Toyota’s Night Vision Dashboard Can ID Pedestrians

May 31, 2008

Night view isn’t exactly a new technology, but Toyota’s latest implementation of it in its Crown Hybrid luxury sedan is a bit different than most. Unlike the company’s previous effort, which displayed images straight on the windshield, this one makes use of an LCD in the dashboard, which also does double duty by displaying the speedometer and all the vehicle’s other vitals.

What’s more, the system also takes things to Terminator-like levels with a pedestrian recognition system, although that apparently only works at speeds below 60 kilometers per hour (the company states it’s also working on a means of recognizing bicycles and animals). No word on exactly what sort of premium all that’ll demand, but Toyota admits it’ll be “several times more costly than the existing meters.” [Source: Tech On!]

Fancy new Fracture site announces October release date

Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, Action

LucasArts has updated the official website for their terrain-deforming third-person shooter Fracture. Now featuring a wide array of videos and other content, the site also proudly claims an October release date for the anticipated title.

The website offers videos demonstrating the range of terrain-deforming weapons, convincing us even more that Fracture is the true spiritual successor to the classic Personal computer game Scorched Earth. LucasArts has also launched a community wiki for the game, presumably because the constantly changing landscape of the wiki echoes the constantly changing landscape of the– nevermind.

Honda Targeting Dog Lovers

Honda Targeting Dog Lovers

Since the dawn of marketing, companies have been targeting niche audiences to sell more products. Soccer moms, gamers, environmentalists, hipsters — all have found themselves in the crosshairs of some company’s marketing campaign or research and development team.

Now, Honda is trying to mine a burgeoning section of the populace in : dog lovers. The company has been aggressively courting canine aficionados with a website dedicated to finding the most dog-friendly Honda car and allowing customers to test drive vehicles with their four-legged friends. Honda also unveiled the W.O.W. concept automobile a few years back with detachable, easy-to-clean seats, wooden floors, and a pop-up puppy crate in the back. In addition, the automaker launched the Freed minivan, which is low enough to the ground to let even small, arthritic dogs climb in.

Toyota is doing its best to compete with the Honda Dog website by launching its own pooch-friendly site. But Honda has a head start, and its Element SUV was voted most dog friendly automobile of 2007 by DogCars.com. [Source: Honda Dog via Reuters]
