Startup Develops iPhone Apps for Universities
November 30, 2008
Filed under: Cell Phones, iPod, iPhone, Mobile Software, School Supplies

We’d estimate that 99.9 percent of the programs in the App Store are little more than a waste of time. So we get excited when a developer starts showing off tools for the iPhone and iPod touch that look genuinely useful.
A small startup, called TerriblyClever, is testing out a suite of applications aimed at universities that, if it becomes widespread, might make the Apple handhelds an indisposable tool for college students. The app is being given a trial run at Stanford University and is appropriately (and unoriginally) called iStanford. It consists of five tools that grant students to add and drop classes, plan a schedule, pay bills, look up contact info in the school directory, find locations on a campus map, and get up-to-date scores from school sports teams.
TerriblyClever hopes to expand its list of client schools and its suite of apps over the ensuing months. This could also be a great delivery method for news about class cancellations and campus alerts. Much better than the text message based CUNY (City University of New York) system which sends out useless messages like:
“FRM:NY-Alert Administrator
SUBJ:NY-Alert
MSG:CUNY Alert:College of Staten Island aΔ”
(that isn’t a typo)

Telstra Country Phone
November 30, 2008

Users looking for a phone with superior reception will want to check out Telstra’s 165i “Country Phone” from ZTE. You know it’s got to have a superior signal, thanks to its unsightly antenna, and it’s also earned Telstra’s Blue Tick certification, meaning it will certainly have good reception levels. Aside from that, the phone also boasts AGPS, 3G, Bluetooth, FM radio, and a 2 megapixel camera. The phone will be going for $529 AUD ($326), and will be available on December 1st.

Telus BlackBerry Storm Going For $299.99
November 30, 2008

This isn’t official just yet, but it should be fairly accurate, as reports have come in that Telus is going to be pricing the BlackBerry Storm rather high, a whopping $649.99 if you plan to purchase the phone unsubsidized. If you’re ok with a contract, then the phone will set you back $599.99, $549.99 and $299.99 if you tie yourself to a 1, 2 or 3-year contract respectively. This isn’t exactly cheap and certainly won’t help sales, but they’ve probably done the math and figured out that you’re willing to pay for the BlackBerry Storm.

The 1.5GB demo download can be grabbed in all Xbox Live regions and (from what we gather from the demo description) features single and Live multiplayer play. Also according to the Red Alert 3 demo description, the game comes complete with “War Bears” and “psychedelic Japanese schoolgirls” … no, really. That’s what it states.

‘Poladroid’ Adds Vintage Polaroid Look to Your Photos
November 30, 2008
Shake it like a… well, you know. Since switching to digital, we’ve often missed the look and feel of prints from our old Polaroid cameras. Sure, you can boot up Photoshop and employ a set of filters and level adjustments to achieve the Polaroid look with the washed out colors and white borders, or you can check out the new Poladroid software.
Once you open the app, drag your photos onto the Polaroid camera icon, and you’ll hear that familiar Polaroid click sound. A mini print will pop up on your screen that’ll lack a recognizable image, just like the real thing. Over time, the picture bleeds into the frame — it takes about a minute or two to see a fully developed image (an x appears on the bottom of the image once it’s ready). Double click on the prints at any time to save the Poladroidized images to your desktop.
It’s a great concept, but the execution still needs some work. The software is slow (yes, the original Polaroid took time to develop, which is part of the charm, but the software seemed to cause our computer to hang several times), and the novelty of the interface wears off after the first few picture developments. Looking to apply the effect to a lot of your photos It’s going to take a while.
We threw a couple of photos we had sitting around onto the app, and added the results below — check out flickr to see more results from around the Web. For now, the software is Mac only, but a Windows app is apparently in development. Still, despite the sluggish feel, the photos often turn out sufficiently vintage, and the app is definitely worth the free download. [From: TUAW]

UK police to wield mobile fingerprint scanners, facial recognition up next
November 30, 2008
Surely your remember Project Lantern from back in 2006, right If you weren’t too fond of that initiative, let’s just state your worst nightmare is coming true. Going forward, every police force in the UK will be equipped with mobile fingerprint scanners, which will allow the fuzz to carry out identity checks right on the street. Dubbed Project Midas, this here setup is supposed to “transform the speed of criminal investigations”while simultaneously freaking out anyone remotely concerned about personal privacy; in fairness, cops insist that fingerprints scanned via these portable devices will not be stored or added to databases, and we’re told that they’ll only be used ” when they suspect an individual of an offense and can’t establish his / her identity.” The 30 million ($47.5 million) to 40 million ($63.4 million) initial phase should hit widespread deployment within 18 months, and in case you thought it was over after this, you should probably know that facial recognition in the field is the next top priority.

Fable 2 slays Far Cry 2 in UK sales charts
November 30, 2008
Filed under: Microsoft Xbox 360, Business
More appropriately, we should probably say, “Fable 2 slayed Far Cry 2, then farted on it, did a heroic pose for the crowd, brought it a shoddy necklace, bought it a house to live in and invited it to unprotected group sex with three random villagers.” Peter Molyneux’s farcical epic debuted at the top of Chart-Track’s UK sales chart, followed by Ubisoft’s African-based shooter at number two. Can somebody get Pete a tissue
Other fun facts about Fable 2’s launch:
- It was Microsoft’s first All Formats #1 since Halo 3.
- It outsold the first Fable’s launch by a margin of 3.8 to 1
- It was the 5th fastest selling Xbox 360 game in the UK, behind Grand Theft Auto IV, Halo 3, FIFA 09 and Call of Duty 4.
European’s virtual football sensation FIFA09 dropped down to number three, followed by Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 and Saints Row 2. Full top ten list after the break.

Still No Beatles on iTunes, Says McCartney
November 29, 2008
Filed under: Audio/Video, Celebrities, iPod, iPhone, Portable Audio
In a new twist to the wearisome saga of the Beatles digitizing their music catalog for iTunes (or any digital service, for that matter), Paul McCartney states that the negotiations have “stalled.” McCartney said, “It’s between EMI and the Beatles, I think,” before adding, “I really hope it will happen because I think it should.” While an EMI spokeswoman sounded hopeful about the matter getting resolved, we’ll just assume this is all Yoko’s fault in keeping with tradition.
