Nokia’s 5800 XpressMusic finally up for grabs Stateside

February 28, 2009

There was a bit of a false alarm at the flagship stores yesterday — Nokia’s New York and Chicago stores got inventory, but didn’t start selling the 5800 right away, causing much discomfort in the hearts of American plectrum lovers and our very own Chris Ziegler. Well, all has been rectified, and now you can pick up Nokia’s touchscreen pioneer, the 5800 XpressMusic, for $399, unlocked and unsubsidized. If you aren’t so much into retail stores you can head to Nokia’s on the web store, though the phone is still inexplicably listed as “pre-order” there — we’re sure things will be rectified soon enough.

New iPhone Software to Include Google Street View, Mass-Transit Directions

February 28, 2009

The T-Mobile G1’s Google Maps Street View implementation is one of the slickest features of the first Android phone, but it looks like Apple’s going to keep feature parity — the latest builds of iPhone OS 2.2 seeded to developers have Street View, as well as the ability to give mass transit directions. That’s pretty useful for cityfolk like us — and we’re also stoked that line-in audio is now supported in the SDK, giving devs the ability to create voice recorders and other interesting audio apps. Of course, there’s no word on when 2.2 will actually arrive, but until then we suppose we’ll live with regular, non-data-augmented streets. Lots of screenshots of the new features at the read link.

Apple Co-Founder Stars In Kinda Funny Outerwear Webisodes

February 28, 2009

After enjoying a lucrative career after co-founding Apple with Steve Jobs, Steve “The Woz” Wozniak can do whatever he wants. He’s dated Kathy Griffin (to each, their own), played on a Segway polo team, and is now starring in a collection of on the web ads for a clothing company.

The commercials are for SCOTTEVEST, which designs clothes with numerous pockets and very special features to incorporate gadgets, so it’s no wonder they’d go with someone like Woz. Two of the ‘Woz-i-sodes’ are up now, featuring the corpulent personal man in a ‘Star Wars‘ spoof and fishing video where he uses an iPod nano for a lure.

We’re not sure how many vests or pairs of 14-pocket cargo pants they’ll sell, but more are on their way every week. Check them out here. [Source: Tuaw]

‘Running From Camera’ Blog Pits Man vs. Timer

February 28, 2009

Camera timers are useful things, enabling you (in theory) to get a group shot with a bunch of people without having to either leave someone out of the picture or ask some random stranger to hold your digicam. But, timers always seem to go off at the wrong time, just as someone blinks or sneezes, or just before the person who hit the button can get back with the group. Possibly taking inspiration from those problems, one man has found an additional use for this dubious “feature,” and has created a blog dedicated to it.

The blog is called Running From Camera and shows pictures of a mystery man in the Dutch city of Rotterdam doing just what you’d think: running from the camera. He sets the timer for two seconds and then makes a break for it, posting the resulting pictures of his back (and heels) to his blog. The photos themselves are naturally comical, but are also frequently quite interesting, with the mystery man having an apparent eye for scenery in and around the city. The site itself has been running since 2007, and it’s caught on over at flickr, where other people are creating their own versions. With an update to Running From Camera just a few weeks ago, it looks like this guy won’t stop running anytime soon. [From: The Sun]

Sony reorganizes divisions, has massive plans for future

February 27, 2009

Like two lovers caught in a seductive tango, chief executive Howard Stringer has taken the lead as president of Sony’s electronics division, taking on a more intimate and hands-on role with the company’s future. The previous president, engineer-turned-exec Ryoji Chubachi, will undertake a new role as vice chairman and stay on to aid Stringer. This current move is part of Sony’s attempt to manage the huge losses the company has suffered recently. The reorganization doesn’t stop there, oh no, Sony is really shaking things up.

The company is forming two new divisions, one of which will oversee PlayStation and Vaio PCs, while the other takes charge of Bravia Televisions, Cybershot digital cameras, and Handycam camcorders. The man in charge of the new PlayStation and Vaio division is none other than Kaz Hirai, head of Sony’s gaming business. Heading up the other division will be Hiroshi Yoshioka, who currently oversees Sony’s Television business.

On the video game side of things, one of the opportunities presented by this restructuring will be the expansion of PSN beyond the realm of games. Sony wants to offer real network-based content that works across all Sony devices, including its game consoles, Walkman brand, and even the e-Reader. With Sony reorganizing all of its divisions, the prospect of SCE having greater access to other divisions in the company becomes higher. This leaves the possibility of new synergistic ideas within Sony, such as PSN on your cell phone or an MP3 store for PSP. This corporate shuffle will allow Sony to be the “united company” it has been telling us it will be … for years.

High-powered, jet-mounted laser one step closer to flying the terrifying skies

February 27, 2009

The jet-mounted laser anti-missile system, brainchild of Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, Boeing and the US Air Force, has been an ongoing project for quite some time. Well, it’s progressed into a final test phase, as evidenced by a new video, which shows the plane strapped with a pilot-controlled laser which is able to intercept missiles significantly earlier than other existing anti-missile tech. The project has plans to continue testing throughout this year, but will also need to be approved by the Obama administration if it is to come to fruition. Feel free to insert obligatory Dr. Evil joke in comments. Check out the video after the break, but fair warning: it autoplays.
