Principal’s Intercepted ‘Sext’ Scandal Rocks UK High School

May 31, 2009

A scandal involving sexting, the risque practice of sending illicit texts or pics, predominantly attributed to teens, is currently rocking a high school in England. The students in question weren’t circulating photos of themselves or their classmates, though. The pics were of their principal.

According to The Telegraph, the headmistress, Sue Brearley, told colleagues that she uploaded the photos of herself posing in her underwear (which were intended for her fiance) from her mobile phone to her laptop. Brearley’s laptop was later connected to the school’s computer system, which is how the students found the photos after allegedly hacking their way in. Police have spoken to two boys about stealing the uploaded photos and circulating them throughout the school, but no disciplinary measures have been levied against them or Brearley.

Even though punishment is not a certainty, one thing is for sure. Students who saw the photos will never view Brearley in the same fashion again. [From: The Telegraph]

White Home, Pentagon announce plans for new cybersecurity positions

May 31, 2009

It’s just been a few short months since a proposed bill called for the creation of a National Cybersecurity Advisor, but it looks like there’s now not one but two new positions in the offing, with both the Pentagon and President Obama himself announcing plans for some newly elevated offices charged with keeping the nation’s networks secure. While a specific “Cybersecurity Czar” hasn’t yet been named, the White Home position will apparently be a member of both the National Security Council and National Economic Council and, in addition to coordinating U.S. response in the event of a major attack, the office will also be tasked with protecting privacy and civil liberties. Details on the new Pentagon office, on the other hand, are expectedly even less specific even though, according to The New York Times, it’ll be a military command that will work to coordinate efforts now scattered across the four armed services, and will apparently serve as complement to the civilian office in the White Home.

- The New York Times, “Pentagon Plans New Arm to Wage Cyberspace Wars”

Verizon finally releasing BlackBerry Storm update this weekend

May 31, 2009

An amazing way to start the weekend, Storm owners: Verizon is finally pulling the trigger on a firmware update, which will be available to all comers starting on Sunday at 3PM Eastern time. If that’s too much trouble, you’ll alternatively be able to sit back, chill, and wait for the over-the-air version to hit, which should follow on at 10PM. Verizon tells us that it’ll be releasing 4.7.0.148, as rumored — just a tiny bump from the failed build 141 that had been rumored before that, but all told, far, far too long since the last official update was rolled out. We can only assume this has been tested superior than a NASA launch at this point, so you’re on notice, guys.

Woz States Jobs Sounds ‘Healthy’

May 31, 2009

Good news for fans of both humans and machines.

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak (pictured left) told the Wall Street Journal that his friend Steve Jobs (pictured right) seemed “healthy” and “energetic” in a current telephone conversation between the two.

Though they didn’t discuss the issue of Jobs’ health directly, Woz optimistically said that Apple’s CEO “doesn’t sound like he’s sick.” Jobs has been on a leave of absence for the past six months due to a hormone imbalance, a result of his battle with pancreatic cancer. Jobs is slated to return to Apple in about a month, although it’s still unclear in what capacity he will rejoin the company.

Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) is next month, and Apple is expected to unveil the new iPhone, as well as to announce its release of the newest update to OSX, dubbed Snow Leopard. And if Jobs shows up to deliver the keynote, you can expect an ovation akin to that received by the Knicks’ Willis Reed in game seven of the 1970 NBA Finals. [From: WSJ ]

Best HD Camcorder Under $250

May 31, 2009

Question: We’re taking a trip cross-country this summer, and I want to bring a video camera for some home movies.
I’ve got a couple hundred bucks to spend but don’t want to break the bank. I’ve seen a lot of these small, solid-state camcorders recently, and I’m wondering which one you recommend

Hey Reader: We live in wonderful times. There are several styles of camcorders to select from these days, and most companies have HD models for under $500. (Video sites such as YouTube and Vimeo make it simple to post HD clips right from a camera. But if you want to edit HD creations first, know that you’ll need a pretty powerful PC.) For your price range, nothing beats the convenience of a pocket-sized camera like the Pure Digital Flip MinoHD, which delivers the goods while still being light on your wallet and incredibly easy to use.

Gone are the days of lugging around an unwieldy camcorder and box of tapes — today’s pocket camcorders record to solid-state hard drives and have hardly any moving parts. Not only does this eliminate tape jams, it also enables nearly instantaneous shooting, so you don’t miss the moment when inspiration strikes.

iPhone 3.0 Age Restriction Controls

May 31, 2009

iPhone 3.0 Age Restriction Controls

It looks like we’ll definitely be seeing some age restriction settings for the apps in Apple’s App Store. Pictured of some age restriction settings have appeared, giving credibility to the story. There isn’t any mention of who will actually be the one to determine the rating of an app, Apple or the developer Hopefully with this in place, getting your apps listed on Apple’s App Store will be much easier and quicker.

4.7.0.141 Firmware For BlackBerry 9500

Folks living in the UK looking for a firmware update for their BlackBerry Storm 9500 can pick up the latest official 4.7.0.141 firmware from Vodafone UK. The good news is that since it’s an official firmware, you won’t have to worry as much about voiding your warranty as such. That being stated, it’s still a good idea to exercise caution and always backup your data before you perform a firmware update, regardless of whether it’s official or not.

Second round of BlizzCon tickets go on sale tomorrow morning

May 31, 2009

If you missed out on the first batch of golden tickets to Blizzard’s annual nerd mecca BlizzCon — which we envision you did, since they sold out in a nanosecond — the second round of tickets will go on sale tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. PST. If you’ve got an extra $125 lying around, you can grab a ticket through the Blizzard store — so make sure your Battle.net account is still up and running!

If you’re horribly agoraphobic (or simply terrified of Murloc-clad cosplayers), you can also watch the two-day convention from the safety of your own home via DirecTV Pay-Per-View or via online streaming. These options will set you back $39.99, but ordering one of them gives you an in-game WoW item — don’t say your crippling social anxiety never garnered you any sweet bonuses!

T-Mobile Vairy Touch Phone

May 30, 2009

T-Mobile Vairy Touch Phone

A glance at the T-Mobile Vairy Touch and you’ll be forgiven for thinking that it’s a HTC Touch. The good news is that this phone will only set you back about $75. While the device might physically look like a HTC Touch, the user interface is absolutely different. In terms of hardware, the touchscreen is reportedly quite good, albeit it takes quite a bit of pressure to activate, which is often a common problem with cheaper resistive displays. Would you pick one of these over a HTC device
