T-Mobile G2 To Have 5mp Camera
August 28, 2009

It looks like T-Mobile is certainly intent on being one of the carriers that provide Android-powered devices, and now word is out that the HTC Sapphire (G2) will sport a 5-megapixel camera, instead of the 3.2-megapixel offering that other carriers use. The device might be released this July at Walmart for $179 on a 2-year contract.

New T-Mobile G1 Render
August 27, 2009

This pictured render of the “G1 v2” phone certainly looks attractive, especially with its sideway-sliding QWERTY keyboard. If the rumors are correct, such a device might be hitting the retail stores for about $150. The device will obviously be powered by Google’s Android. Based on the picture, we’re certainly looking forward to seeing this device in stores.

Taxi GPS Helps Recover $500K Violin
August 26, 2009
While GPS is sometimes criticized for killing the art of map-reading (and for sending tourists hundreds of miles in the wrong direction), the navigation technology recently made headlines by helping one man recover a $500,000 violin.
Returning from the Hamptons last Monday, musician Hahn-Bin accidentally left his 18th century Giovanni Francesco Pressenda violin in a New York City taxi cab. Returning home, Hahn-Bin realized it was still in the cab, and he contacted the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission. The New York Post reports that the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) was able to track the violin via the taxi’s GPS-unit, standard in city cabs since 2007. The AFP quoted him as saying, “Losing an instrument is a greatest fear, even more than making a mistake on stage.”
Wii Sports Resort lands in one million US homes
August 25, 2009
Nintendo’s tropical minigame getaway, Wii Sports Resort, has managed to entice one million gamers in the US, the publisher has announced. Debuting July 26, it didn’t take the game long to reach that number (it sold 508,000 in July), and we’re sure that we’ll be writing another post like this one in a month or so when the game reaches two million in sales. Anyone taking bets

Limited Edition Samsung Messager announced
August 25, 2009

Speak about tattooing your mobile phone, MetroPCS and Samsung unleashed the Samsung Messager r450 designed with SA Studios Global, a multicultural marketing bureau, and artist Mark Machado a.k.a. Mister Cartoon. The Mexican-American tattoo and graffitti artist, based in Los Angeles, has worked with numerous celebrities such as Justin Timberlake, Beyonce and Eminem. This time, he’ll have his artwork featured on both the case of the r450 as well as the handset’s preloaded content in the form of exclusive wallpapers, animations, ringtones and if those are not enough downloadable content from MetroPCS’ website. This is not merely putting art on a phone - the first ten units will be auctioned off for charity in August, and a portion of the series’ sales revenue will fund community art centers, outreach programmes for at-risk youth and also provide art supplies to local Los Angeles schools.

Joystiq Podcast 106 - Crackpot or crockpot edition
August 22, 2009
The most shocking thing about the episode is not the introduction of the Joystiq emergency hotline or our on-site report from BlizzCon. No, the most shocking thing is that we somehow avoid talking about how much we love Batman: Arkham Asylum for the full two hours. Spoiler alert: Very much.
Also, shaving is discussed in detail.

Sony PSP Phone Possible
August 22, 2009

One rumor that refuses to die is the rumor of a PSP (PlayStation Portable) Phone by Sony. Now it looks like Sony Ericsson President Hideki Komiyama might have just reignited the rumors, as he has been quoted as saying that no plan is too crazy or far-fetched to consider, and a PlayStation-branded phone “could happen”. Will it become a reality

Video: Moldover CD case rocks a light theremin, our socks
August 19, 2009
When a tip comes in touting video of another so-called YouTube “musical genius” it’s hard to fight through the blas glaze in which we find ourselves entombed. Still, one indifferent mouse-click later and we’re treated to Moldover’s Awesome Edition CD. The awesome part is the custom-designed circuit board that accompanies the CD and lists the tracks while doubling as a theremin instrument with headphone jack — all in a standard-size jewel case. Hit the on button and begin making ‘music’ by waving your hand in front of the light sensors. Sure it sounds a bit like you’re squeezing air through a pinched balloon and it costs $50 ($10 for CD-only or $25 for a Pocket Edition), but hey, give this guy some credit for innovation. Check the video after the break, you will believe at the 1-minute mark.
[Thanks, Rich DDT]
