Cursed Mountain dev Deep Silver Vienna shuttered
January 31, 2010
As confirmed by parent company Koch Media to Develop, Cursed Mountain developer Deep Silver Vienna has apparently been closed. Citing “the overall economic situation” and noting “this decision is not easy for us,” the 20-person staff was recently cut and told they would receive pay through the end of March. Develop posits that the studio’s other game — Ride to Hell — will likely remain unaffected by the shutdown, as UK dev house Eutechnyx is handling development and Koch Media’s Munich offices will oversee the game’s management.
Deep Silver Vienna was formed in the wake of Rockstar Vienna’s closing back in 2006, and originally called itself Games That Matter. Ex-Rockstar Vienna heads Hannes Seifert and Niki Laber launched the studio, and it is said that Siefert has moved on to a position at Square Enix Europe as a creative director. As with every case like this, we’d like to wish those affected the best of luck.

AT&T To Sell Samsung Infinity Budget Touchscreen Handset
January 31, 2010

Samsung is scheduled to release the Infinity - a good-looking, full-touchscreen budget phone - this July 20th. Targeting the mid to low-range phone lineup, it will feature a 3-inch 240?400 pixels touchscreen display, 2MP camera, quad-band GSM/EDGE and dual-band UMTS, along with Bluetooth, microSD expansion and aGPS. It is good looking, which should help it overcome its lower specs compared to its predecessor, the Eternity. And this time, let’s hope it will last longer than its name sounds.

Modded Honda Motorbike Looks Like a Spaceship, Gets Over 200 MPG
January 31, 2010

At its very essence, a motorbike is a pretty darn fuel-efficient mode of transportation. Filling up the gas tank of a standard model won’t exactly break your bank account (or even your piggy bank). But for Allert Jacobs, his Honda ANF125i Innova’s fuel economy of more than 100 miles per gallon (mpg) just wasn’t good enough. So he went to work. According to Treehugger, Jacobs modified the bike into a 200-plus-mpg machine that looks more like a spaceship than it does a motorbike. How did he do it Well, he added 88 pounds to the bike, but reduced wind resistance, too. By lowering the seat position, placing his feet at the front of the bike and adding an aerodynamic shell, Jacobs reduced the drag of the bike, which can typically account for 50-percent of a bike’s fuel at mere speeds of 15 or 20 mph.
We’re all for saving money, but how far do you take it It’s not like Jacobs was paying $100 to fill up an SUV. Some might call his design and modifications frugal (picture of the unmodified bike after the break). But at the risk of being politically incorrect, we’ll call it like we see it: cheap. AT&T Vows to Improve Service, Jobs States You Don’t for 10 Hours
January 31, 2010

Highlights from this morning’s other large tech headlines….
- AT&T has been under siege from consumers and competitors over its network coverage, particularly for spotty and inconsistent iPhone service in major metropolitan areas like New York City and San Francisco. The company has vowed to address the issue, and has pledged $2 billion to improve its coverage over the next year. [From: The Huffington Post]
- Compared to the impressive week-long battery life of the Kindle e-reader, the fleeting 10-hour ability of the new Apple iPad seems ridiculously miniscule. But, that’s no cause for concern, because CEO Steve Jobs is offering a reminder that “you’re not going to read for 10 hours.” He has obviously never read ‘The Shining.’ [From: Engadget]
- Steve Jobs may have just trumpeted the video playing abilities of his latest Apple darling, the iPad, but owners of the gadget will initially have limited live-streaming options. Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said yesterday that the company isn’t developing a ‘Watch Instantly’ function for the iPad, and that such a service is “not a massive priority for us.” [From: Ars Technica]
- When considering oppressive government regimes that censor and ban certain material from their citizens, Australia rarely comes to mind. The nation, though, has investigated Internet censorship practices and has also limited the in-store availability of violent video games. Consumers are now growing volatile as the government is also refusing to create an “adults-only” label for video games, effectively banning games that weren’t all-ages. [From: Global Post]
- Last spring, the National Archives and Records Administration discovered that a hard drive, which stored personal information on government employees and their families, had been lost or stolen. The organization has revealed that the breach actually compromised confidential information for over 250,000 Clinton staff members, including at least one of former Vice President Al Gore’s daughters. Namco Bandai to spread Fallout: New Vegas across Australia, Europe
January 30, 2010
Holy wow, there’s actually some news about Obsidian / Bethesda’s Fallout: New Vegas. We hadn’t seen hide nor hair of the game since its announcement in April of last year and … well, we still haven’t. No, dear Readers, today’s news is merely that the game will be distributed in many locales outside of the US by Namco Bandai.
Specifically, the Japan-headquartered giant will be putting New Vegas into the hands of gamers in Australia, Austria, Benelux, France, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland and Rivet City. (We made that last one up.) For its part, Bethesda mostly talked up the partnership, but added that, “Fallout: New Vegas builds upon the immersive gaming experience that made Fallout 3 the 2008 Game of the Year.” Yes, please!

INQ launches Chat and Mini 3G Social Mobiles
January 30, 2010

INQ this day launches the Chat and Mini, two new 3G social mobiles which now incorporate internet-based Twitter along with Facebook, Skype and instant messaging. These handsets represent a new direction for INQ as the phones are designed from the ground up for mobile world wide web, where popular world wide web applications are embedded into the underlying software to enable simple access. The Chat 3G is INQ’s first QWERTY device which comes with free push Gmail, removing the cost borne by operators or consumers, while the Mini 3G provides an entry-level social mobile at the fraction of the price of application-rich devices. Both phones come with HSDPA modem for high-speed wireless broadband on Computers and Macs, Brew 4.0 and Java MIDP 2.0 for application development multitasking, and presence-enabled active address book to let the user choose how to initiate communication. Seems that best things do arrive in small packages.
