U.S. Government Legalizes iPhone Jailbreaking

July 28, 2010

Jailbroken iPhone 4

If you jailbreak your iPhone in a country where jailbreaking is legal, can it really be called jailbreaking That’s what American iPhone users will soon have to ask themselves, thanks to a new set of governmental rules approved by the Library of Congress. As the AP reports, the Library has just legalized code-breaking on Apple’s smartphone, meaning users can now download non-Apple approved apps with a absolutely clear conscience. The new ruling comes as an exemption to a 1988 federal law that bans consumers from working around technical barriers that companies impose to prevent unauthorized use of their products. The Library of Congress, which manages the U.S. Copyright Office, reviews its list of exemptions each three years, and, this go-round, finally decided to allow parole to the iPhone.

Apple has become notorious for the tight, puritanical approach it has taken in governing the App Store, and we’re pretty sure that the company won’t take too kindly to any government-sanctioned infringement upon that hegemony. Realistically, however, these new rules are probably more ceremonial than anything else. People have been emancipating their iPhones for years now, so it’s unlikely that any newfound legality will encourage a new wave of do-gooders to shed their phones’ digital shackles. Symbolically, though, the Library’s decision tacitly confirms what we’ve all known for a while now; the smartphone app market has become bigger than any one company, and should function freely, without the threat of legal action hanging over it. Exploring Apple’s Divinity, ‘You Gotta See This’ App Creates Seamless Panoramas

July 27, 2010

Michelangelo meets the iPhone

There’s a load of great tech news happening out there each day, and, unfortunately, we just can’t cover it all. Here are a few of the other noteworthy things we saw this day on our never-ending journey through the wild, wild Web.

  • After decades of fighting, the Mac vs. Computer war shows no sign of subsiding. A new paper from Texas A&M’s Heidi Campbell examines Apple’s apparent divinity, as based on four myths (creation, hero, satanic and resurrection). [From: The Atlantic]
  • The unfortunately titled ‘You Gotta See This!’ might be the coolest mobile photography app we’ve witnessed this year. The iPhone 4-only app uses the phone’s gyroscope to find the camera’s position and automatically snaps photos as you move the camera. It then stitches all of the pics together into one giant panorama, saving you the effort of having to create a seamless image in Photoshop. [From: TUAW]
  • Gawker.tv compiles the dumbest things said about the Internet caught on tape, ranging from Senator Ted Stevens’ classic quote, “It’s not a huge truck; it’s a series of tubes,” to Biden’s woefully out of touch quip, “Do you know the website number” [From: Gawker.tv]

iPhone App Reads Your E-Mails to Grant for Smoother Driving

July 27, 2010

Text'n Drive

As mobile technology grows, it seems, so do the dangers of driving. First, we got talking while driving, which, though irritating, rarely results in more than an exceptionally slow driver. Then, we started seeing the evidence of texting while driving — the swerving, the stoplight-running, etc. Well, now, with the smartphone, we have to deal with those bewildering types who have the gall to read and write e-mails while behind the wheel. Thankfully, one iPhone app has come to the rescue.

‘Text’n Drive,’ currently available at the App Store, promises to read these sociopathic drivers their incoming e-mails aloud, thus saving the rest of us from an untimely demise. (Contrary to its name, ‘Text’n Drive’ doesn’t presently work with text messages. CEO Danield Robichaud states they’re working on it.) The app has been successfully tested with the major e-mail clients, including Gmail, AOL, Hotmail and MobileMe. For free, the “lite” version will do its duty, but only for the first 45 words of any given e-mail. If you’re willing to pony up $20, though, you can get your hands on the “Pro” version, which will read 500 words, and take dictation from you, too. If you ask us, $20 is a small price to pay for public safety. But then, again, so is putting down the damn iPhone for 15 minutes. [From: PCWorld]

Apple Launches iPhone 4 Case Program, Sending Bumper Refunds Soon

July 26, 2010

iPhone 4 Case ProgramKicking off what we hope is the beginning of the end of the ‘Antennagate‘ mess, Apple launched its iPhone 4 Case Program this day. Steve Jobs promised free Bumpers, cases and refunds to iPhone 4 owners at last week’s emergency press conference, and you’re eligible for the refund or case as long as you purchase Apple’s latest phone before September 30th.

For those of you who have already bought an official Bumper, your credit card will soon be credited for the full cost of the buy, including taxes and shipping. Cash, check and credit card purchases made at the Apple Store require that you to return to the Apple Store for a refund, but AT&T purchasers get to fill out this Rebate Form and return by mail. If you haven’t purchased a case yet, fire up the App Store on your iPhone, grab the ‘iPhone 4 Case Program’ app, and select your complimentary reception-saving cover. Once you’ve jumped through the digital paperwork, it’s probably ideal to just launch some ‘Angry Birds’ — your new case probably won’t be arriving for a few weeks. [From: Apple, via: Engadget]

White iPhone 4 Delayed Again, ‘Horrendous’ vBulletin Flaws Could Expose Thousands

July 24, 2010

White iPhone 4

Highlights from this morning’s other large tech headlines….

  • The white iPhone 4 manufacturing problems have apparently forced Apple to delay the model’s release to sometime “later this year.” [From: Engadget]
  • World wide web Brands released a patch for its flawed vBulletin message board software this week, but reportedly there are persistent, “horrendous” vulnerabilities that could compromise personal information for thousands of users. [From: BBC]
  • Facebook and its lawyers now “strongly suspect” that the signature on Paul Ceglia’s purported ownership contract is not Mark Zuckerberg’s, but is instead “forged.” Ceglia’s lawyer labeled Facebook’s dismissal of the contract as simultaneously “reckless and dangerous” and “hilarious.” [From: Wired]
  • Months ago, HP trumpeted the abilities of its upcoming Slate (while taking a few shots at the iPad), but consumers will have to wait a tiny longer to see those features in action. HP exec Tom Bradley told attendees at Fortune’s Brainstorm Tech conference that the company now plans to release the “customer specific” device in the fall. [From: Engadget]
  • With a new “dynamically” updated Netflix system (that should be finished by October), Sony hopes to eliminate the need for those troublesome and easily misplaced PS3 discs. [From: Joystiq]
  • Based on trusted reports from connected insiders (salespeople, of course), Apple is reportedly encouraging retailers to sell existing iMac stock, a move that could be in preparation for an upgraded (touch) line of devices. [From: Engadget]

Thief Nabbed After Swiping iPhone Used for GPS Testing

July 23, 2010

iPhone GPS in San FranciscoA useful tip to all would-be iPhone thieves: when stealing said iPhone, it’s a good idea to make sure it’s not running a real-time GPS tracking program. Unfortunately for Horatio Toure, he’d to learn this life lesson the hard way.

As the San Francisco Chronicle reports, the 31-year-old Toure recently stole an iPhone from a seemingly ordinary woman, Jordan Sturm, whom he stealthily targeted while riding around on his bicycle. He didn’t realize, though, that the phone was running a GPS program, which clearly identified where the thief was heading. The woman, as it turns out, was an assistant to David Kahn, chief exec at Covia Labs of Mountain View. Kahn lent the phone to his assistant, Sturm, in order for him to demonstrate a new GPS-enabled program called Alert & Respond. As Sturm walked around San Francisco, Kahn was mapping her exact location on his laptop, and promoting the product before an audience of public relations employees in another part of town. When Toure swiped her phone, then, police easily tracked him down and arrested him about ten minutes after the incident.

Teen Barters Old Cell Phone on Craigslist to Eventually Land a Porsche

July 23, 2010

Steven Ortiz, like most high schoolers, used to rock an ancient cell phone. But, in the span of just two years, the teenager magically turned his raggedy old burner into a sleek Porsche Boxster S… with, of course, a little help from Craigslist.

As the San Gabriel Valley Tribune reports, Ortiz began scouring through Craigslist’s barter section when he was just 15, looking for anyone willing to take his phone in exchange for something else. He finally traded his old mobile for a better one, then traded that phone for an iPod Touch. He bartered the iPod for a dirt bike, and eventually obtained a whole fleet of cars. Among the cars that passed through Ortiz’s garage was a 1975 Ford Bronco, which is reportedly something of a collector’s item. Two years after beginning his barter bonanza, the 17-year-old became the proud owner of a 2000 Porsche Boxster S. The sports automobile, in fact, was actually worth $9,000 — about $6,000 less than Ortiz’ Bronco. But we’re pretty sure that being able to wheel that thing around his high school parking lot far exceeds any monetary loss.
