Why Broken Gadgets Are Easier to Thorw Away Than Fix

November 17, 2008

Frustrated with his beloved iPhone acting up on him, Popular Mechanics writer Glenn Derene used the opportunity to write this piece on the iPhone, and the bigger state of electronics today.

After struggling to coax functionality from the iPhone’s buttons for months, Derene finally caved in, taking the phone to his local Apple Store’s Genius Bar. The resulting tale should not be unfamiliar to any trouble-shooting Mac user, or problematic iPod owner; Derene waited for over two hours to receive no recommendation other than the one to buy a new iPhone.

Blame for this “no-fix” phenomenon can be, according to Derene, attributed to the increasingly complex and integrated electronic systems that lie within the most advanced gadgets. While a savvy, tech-minded amateur could — with some extra time on his hands and help from Radio Shack — fix most of yesterday’s electronics, he’s today confined to tossing his misbehaving gadget into the garbage. (The iPhone’s backplate can’t even be removed without destroying the phone).

So, after all that, what’s the culprit What was it that defeated this fine specimen of machinery That nearly drove Derence mad Pocket lint lodged under the buttons, of course. [From: Popular Mechanics]

Jean-Michel Jarre Designed iPod Speakers Hit France

November 14, 2008

There’s certainly no shortage of eye-catching iPod docks / speaker systems to select from, but this new so-called AeroSystem is the only one to get Jean-Michel Jarre’s stamp of approval, and that’s enough to get at least a few folks to take notice (though we’ll personally stick with our Joy Division Zune). In addition to being a conversation starter, the speaker unit also look to be capable enough audio-wise, with it packing two 20W RMS speakers and a 45W RMS subwoofer into its retro-inspired enclosure, plus a USB port and a 3.5mm jack to complement the requisite iPod dock connector. As far as these things go, it’s also not too ridiculously expensive, with it running €450 (or close to $580), though you’ll likely spend a bit more than that if you hope to get one of these out of France.

Obama to Use World wide web More Than Any Other President

November 14, 2008

This was a seminal election year, wasn’t it In a time of economic downturn, war, natural disasters, and, uh, ‘Gears of War,’ a little change was needed — both in the world, and in the way one presidential candidate got his message out to a younger, more tech-savvy crowd. Yes, Barack Obama did the unthinkable and set up a consistent base of communication with a generation of people that typically see an election as weeks of boring news. His secret weapon The Internet.

Sure, Obama had a great Web site that featured, among other things, limited edition art and clothing designed by the hippest of today’s celebrities. Sure, he even exchanged emails with Scarlett Johansson. But he also has a stellar iPhone app (with the UI done by a new member of the also stellar Iconfactory), a ridiculously popular Facebook group, and a revealing Flickr page maintained by his official photographer. And we’re not even getting into all of the video he created and shared, nor the fact that sites like YouTube had gained tremendous traction as popular media during the election. (He’s also in the hit Electronic Arts game, ‘Mercenaries 2,’ for what it’s worth.)

Man Proposes Using iPhone Application, Woman States Yes

November 13, 2008

A few months ago, we told about you told you about eight men who proposed using tech. Now, we can add yet another geek to the list. Dan Deeble, a 35-year-old IT supervisor from Antelope, CA, popped the question using Scribular, a free iPhone app that works with the phone’s GPS to let users leave notes at specific locations. Once somebody gets to the location, they have the ability to read the note, which is how Deeble got his girlfriend, Crystal Gardner, to go on a scavenger hunt around Sacramento.

It started with a Post-it note in her vehicle, telling her to use Scribular on her way to work. For the rest of the day, she drove around finding different notes — read them here — that all ended with “p.s. - I love you.” The phrase comes from the motion picture of the same name, about a woman getting love letters from her deceased husband, which was the first motion picture Deeble and Gardner saw together. At the end of the day, the couple met at a restaurant where a phone call from her sister prompted her to read the final note: “Almost one year ago, I found you — and I found love…. I ask if you’ll grant me the greatest privilege of my life and marry me. Forever yours, Dan.” She responded “of course I’ll,” and techies around the globe got another idea for romance. [From: Wired]

New iPhone Software to Include Google Street View, Mass-Transit Directions

November 12, 2008

The T-Mobile G1’s Google Maps Street View implementation is one of the slickest features of the first Android phone, but it looks like Apple’s going to keep feature parity — the latest builds of iPhone OS 2.2 seeded to developers have Street View, as well as the ability to give mass transit directions. That’s pretty useful for cityfolk like us — and we’re also stoked that line-in audio is now supported in the SDK, giving devs the capability to create voice recorders and other interesting audio apps. Of course, there’s no word on when 2.2 will actually arrive, but until then we suppose we’ll live with regular, non-data-augmented streets. Lots of screenshots of the new features at the read link.

Apple Co-Founder Stars In Kinda Funny Outerwear Webisodes

November 12, 2008

After enjoying a lucrative career after co-founding Apple with Steve Jobs, Steve “The Woz” Wozniak can do whatever he wants. He’s dated Kathy Griffin (to each, their own), played on a Segway polo team, and is now starring in a collection of on the web ads for a clothing company.

The commercials are for SCOTTEVEST, which designs clothes with numerous pockets and one-of-a-kind features to incorporate gadgets, so it’s no wonder they’d go with someone like Woz. Two of the ‘Woz-i-sodes’ are up now, featuring the corpulent personal man in a ‘Star Wars‘ spoof and fishing video where he uses an iPod nano for a lure.

We’re not sure how many vests or pairs of 14-pocket cargo pants they’ll sell, but more are on their way every week. Check them out here. [Source: Tuaw]
