BlackBerry Bold Delayed In The US

Eager future-users of the BlackBerry Bold will be disappointed to find out that they have to wait a little bit longer for its release, as the Bold has just been delayed on both Rogers and AT&T. The delay probably won’t be too much of an issue for Rogers’ customers, as it has just been pushed back from July 25th to July 29th. Unfortunately AT&T has pushed the date from mid-July to mid-August, meaning it probably won’t hit the retail stores until about September 1st. The latest update from Engadget Mobile also states that Telstra has announced that the Bold will be released in Australia near the end of September, and will be available free to its business customers.

AT&T Planning Speech Recognition For iPhone

AT&T Planning Speech Recognition For iPhone

iPhone users who are screaming for voice recognition on their phones might be happy to hear that AT&T are working on a speech-recognition service of sorts. They’re currently working on a new web service called Speech Mashups. Speech Mashups will send users’ speech to a remote server, which will translate the command to control the handset. This on the web service should be available to most browser-equipped AT&T handsets, though they’re currently focusing on the iPhone.

The bad news is that since it’s a web app, it won’t work with native applications on the iphone. Aside from that, it also needs a fast data connection, so users using an EDGE network will probably find the speeds too slow.

AT&T Revenue Grows Steadily

AT&T must be enjoying the iPhone craze, especially since they posted a 52% increase in cash flow from data, which also includes messaging. They were definitely helped by the availability of 3G handsets in the market, and of course, the iPhone, as nearly every iPhone customer signed up for a data plan. Revenue from their wireless division increased by 15.8%, which was helped by a net subscriber gain of 1.3 million, and brings the headcount of AT&T users to 72.9 million.

Sony Ericsson Walkman Party

Sony Ericsson is looking to celebrate its Walkman series in style. To celebrate, they’ve officially announced their W902 “Patti”, W595 slider, and W302 candybar Walkman phones. To begin from the bottom, the W302 drops 3G to try and keep the price of the phone down, and has basic specs like a 2 megapixel camera, 512MB or M2 memory, FM radio and stereo Bluetooth.

The W595 has stereo speakers, 2GB of M2 memory, 3.2 megapixel camera, and the distinct motion sensing Shake control, as well as a stereo share jack to share music with a friend.

And the granddaddy of them all, the W902 has UMTS/HSDPA 2100 data, a cool 5 megapixel camera, and 8GB of M2 memory, and will utilize a 2.2-inch, 240 x 320 pixel display. The headphones that come bundled with this phone will be the high-end HPM-77 headphones, which promise clear audio with good bass. The only phone missing from the party was the Alicia, so hopefully that model will surface soon.

iPhone 3G SIM Unlocked On Video

July 28, 2008

While the iPhone 3G has without a doubt been unlocked to run on any carrier, but there doesn’t seem to be anybody bragging about unlocking the handset via software only. This time it seems that gsmphone-unlocking has a video of the iPhone 3G swapping SIM cards and working without any adapters. The video shows the user swapping from a Rogers SIM to Fido, though the video frustratingly doesn’t provide any information on how to do so. There are people suggesting that this video was just created by someone who managed to get hold of an early copy of the Dev Team’s unlocking tool, which should be available to the public sometime soon anyways.

Tag Heuer Meridiist Visits The FCC

Pictures from the FCC have a habit of making a classy phone look not-so-classy. In this case, even Tag Heuer’s upcoming Meridiist isn’t spared. This phone, which was developed with ModeLabs, is set to compete with the Vertus and Mobiados out there. The FCC entry also has a user manual for the phone. Since the phone is going to cost well over give grand, the online manual will probably be the closest most people will get to this phone.

Asus Working On A P522?

The GFC (Global Certification Forum) has just unveiled some 3G Asus smartphones, which will most likely be powered by Windows Mobile, since all of the Asus P-series smartphones run on Windows Mobile. Said phones should be using the model numbers P552 and P552w, though some sites are reporting it as P522 and P522w. Though there isn’t much information regarding the specifications of the phone yet, it seems that it will be a triband GSM (900/1800/1900) MHz and singleband UMTS (2100 MHz) phone, which supports MMS and browsing. Keep an eye out here for updated news regarding this phone!

Sony Ericsson Set To Release PlayNow

Sony Ericsson Set To Release PlayNow?

Sony Ericsson looks like they’re finally going to release their PlayNow Arena mobile media store in some European locales. Screenshots of PlayNow are even surfacing on the internet. While it’s been a long wait, there really doesn’t seem to be anything groundbreaking in PlayNow to justify the delay. It looks very much like a normal portal for buying games, images and music, fairly standard stuff. At least Nokia’s N-Gage has the excuse that they have more to work on as they have to deal with the gaming aspect of the N-Gage systems.

iPhone 3G 2.1 Beta Firmware

iPhone 3G 2.1 Beta Firmware

It looks like Apple is seeding a beta of firmware 2.1, which might have a couple of new GPS features, possibly turn-by-turn directions. The 2.1 firmware isn’t to be confused with the supposed 2.0.1 firmware that will fix a couple of bugs that are in 2.0. Another rumored addition to 2.1 is the copy/paste functionality that each iPhone user has been begging for. Though there was still a shortage of the iPhone in the US a while ago, it seems that stores have been updated in the last hour, so there are available stocks.
