Review: StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty

July 29, 2010

StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty isn’t just traditional, it’s a tradition.

If any other company but Blizzard had simply put new graphics over the same old interface, it would have resulted in an interesting novelty at best. But within moments of putting my hands on StarCraft 2 during the open beta, it was clear this was no mere novelty. It’s been more than a decade since I played the original, but the sequel feels both instantly fresh and familiar. It’s not a game that’ll be forgotten in the rush of the coming months’ releases. It feels timeless.

‘EverQuest 2 Extended’ bringing free-to-play to EQ2

July 28, 2010

SOE has announced a free-to-play version of EverQuest 2, called EverQuest 2 Extended. Yes, a free-to-play version. Rather than switching its business model as some MMOs have, SOE is actually going to operate Extended in parallel with the existing, subscription-based version of EverQuest 2.

Extended uses a smaller web-based application instead of EQ2’s full download, and offers both free and optional paid membership content, as well as the option to purchase equipment. It includes access to all the game zones available in the “real” game, including those added in expansions up to “Shadow Odyssey“. In other words, everything but the stuff added in “Sentinel’s Fate.” Find all the confusing details about the membership options after the break, or check the FAQ.

EverQuest 2 Extended is expected to launch in beta form “on or around August 17, 2010.” Along with it, UI improvements will be released for the current version of EQ2.

Nintendo trademarks advocate new names for 3DS features

July 27, 2010

Look, considering Nintendo drew just about each one of its big guns from their respective holsters when it revealed the 3DS lineup during an E3 press conference last month, we don’t blame you if this story doesn’t thrill you to your core. The company recently filed a set of trademarks relating to software for the three-dimensional device, including “CrossPass,” “CrossPass Network,” “CrossPass Connection” and “CrossPass Mode.” It seems the handheld’s always-on Tag mode has been given a much more Google-able moniker.

Nintendo also filed trademarks for “3D Paddleball,” “3D Hopper,” “Target Shooting” and “3D Challenge” — all of which were available in tech demo form at E3. Does this mean they could see the light of day when the 3DS gets released next spring We’re not sure, but we wouldn’t mind sinking a few more hours mastering the subtleties of Hallway Pong.

See how the other half lives in Gears of War 3 ‘Beast Mode’ footage

July 26, 2010

We didn’t think there was anything slower in the whole, entire universe than one of Gears of War 3’s lumbering, impossibly muscle-bound protagonists. We were wrong — as evidenced by the two GameTrailers videos posted after the break, that honor goes to the new Beast Mode’s “Berserker” character.

Company of Heroes CD keys to unlock unspecified bonuses in Company of Heroes Online

July 25, 2010

The free-to-play Company of Heroes On the web won’t fully replace that disc copy of Company of Heroes you’ve, as there’s still at least one important piece of content for which you’ll need the disc — even if that piece of content is a Company of Heroes On the web extra.

“We are urging people to hang onto their CD keys,” producer Greg Wilson told Computer Gamer. “We don’t have the details yet, but we really appreciate our current retail CoH fanbase, we love them and we recognise that they helped us get where we are this day with this franchise. We want to make sure they feel appreciated, so there will be something special for people who are retail owners. News of that’ll come.” So if you were going to shatter your disc in rage about the freemium followup, keep the CD key. Just in case.

As for people who haven’t yet discovered Company of Heroes, and who play other free-to-play stuff on Facebook, Wilson hopes that some of the millions of players participating in social games will “get exhausted of that fast food style of gameplay, and they’ll want to graduate to something a bit more - whether that’s a triple-A Personal computer title or something in between.”

Dead Space lives in two new formats: animated motion picture and graphic novel out this winter

July 24, 2010

The Dead Space universe just got a bit less lonely. EA announced two more projects for the property, this time an animated feature called Dead Space Aftermath, available January 2011, and a graphic novel called Dead Space Salvage, expected out December 2010. Perfect for those of you who love Dead Space, but somehow hate video games.

The animated Aftermath tells the story of a group sent by the Government to the site of the Aegis VII disaster, specifically to be exposed to Marker shards, in order to create a carrier for a “Marker blueprint.” Of course, the people don’t know that’s why they’ve been brought there, and since it’s horror (and Dead Space) we can expect the expedition to go … well, not great. The Salvage comic, published by IDW, is about a group called the “Magpies” who encounter the abandoned Ishimura, which is full of candy Government agents and necromorphs.

We’ll learn more details about these projects during today’s Comic-Con panel, “Building a Horror Entertainment Franchise: Dead Space 2.”

Okamiden media brings the cute to Comic-Con

July 23, 2010

If there’s one thing we have the ability to all concur on, it’s the overwhelming level of cuteness to be found in Okamiden, the upcoming sequel to Okami. From the pint-sized Amaterasu, to the Animal Crossing-like speech of the game’s inhabitants, we’re kinda feeling like the proprietors of a very different web site right now. We’re trying our ideal not to dawwwwww all over the place.

But we digress. You’ve yet to experience this feeling for yourself, so go ahead and check out the new media, straight from Comic-Con. If you’ll excuse us, we’re going to draw some kittens for a while.

Final Fantasy Legends announced for Japanese mobile phones

July 22, 2010

For those of you wondering why the Final Fantasy franchise has seemingly betrayed its roots, you’re probably about to encounter some seriously mixed feelings. According to Andriasang, Square Enix recently announced Final Fantasy Legends: Hikari to Yami no Senshi (Warriors of Light and Darkness), a retro-style entry into the franchise featuring all the crystals, job systems and 2D sprites which fans of the company’s classic RPGs could ever hope for.

Unfortunately, the game will be distributed episodically through Square’s Final Fantasy Mobile platform for Japanese cell phones later this year. However, it is being developed by the team behind Final Fantasy IV: The After Years, which started as a mobile title before making it to the much more accessible WiiWare platform. We’ve got our fingers crossed that Legends will get a similar treatment.

If your hunger for fiction set in the Dead Space universe hasn’t been slaked by two games, an on the web animated comic and a straight-to-DVD feature film, you might want to sink your teeth into Dead Space: Martyr, which hit bookstore shelves today in paperback for $15.

Written by Last Days and The Open Curtain author B.K. Evenson, the novel gives a bit of backstory on the Church of Unitology, as well as the “Black Marker” artifact frequently referenced in the original game. It also reveals how the latter made the former go completely cuh-raaaaazy.
