World of Warcraft of reaches 11 million mark

November 18, 2008

Filed under: Mac, Personal computer, MMO

We decided we weren’t going to make any sort of snide comments about how little Blizzard needs the money, this time. Nope, we’re just going to hit you with the facts: World of Warcraft recently hit 11 million subscribers, up from 10 million in January. The nine months that separate the two milestones is the biggest in WoW’s history. In fact, the past few million-sub jumps have happened at reliable six-month intervals.

If you were a Blizzard staffer who plugged all this data into a chart, you would be imaginary, because who has time to make charts when the new “Thrones Made of Bald Eagle Heads” catalog just arrived

…Crap, we were so close.

4GB Piano Black PSP Brite bundle nixed, sticking with Ratchet & Clank pack

November 17, 2008

Already have Echochrome on PSP, Ratchet & Clank Size Matters on UMD, as well as the DVD and Blu-ray release of National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets Yeah, us too (except for the National Treasure 2 part … seriously, what’s your problem), which is why we’re drinking early this morning. Sony’s John Koller reports, via the PlayStation blog, that Sony has decided to nix the so-called PSP-3000 Core pack in favor of just one option: the already available Ratchet & Clank Entertainment Pack.

The Core Pack was to be released in November with a 4GB Memory Stick (a boost from the R&C pack’s 1GB stick), an Everday Shooter PlayStation Network voucher and, of course, a PSP Brite in sleek “Piano Black” instead of “Mystic Silver,” all for the same $199.99 asking price. If you’re really just waiting for a black PSP Brite, Koller says the Ratchet & Clank pack will be back in black (as well as silver) starting in December. Upshot: you can absolutely regift the stuff you don’t want!

Street Fighter IV secures Feb. 17th release

November 17, 2008

Just a little while ago, Capcom made an OMG MEGATON announcement regarding Street Fighter IV, confirming that February 17th will be the game’s official release in North America and February 20th for our friends in Europe. That means Capcom’s Winter release promise has been fulfilled. That also means that the Gamestop rumored February 2nd release date was a tad bit off. No matter, February will be the month of Street Fighter and the month of total awesomeness!

Rock Band 2, GH:World Tour’s shared tracks compared

November 16, 2008

Filed under: Sony PlayStation 2, Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, Rhythm

If you’re interested to see how Rock Band 2 and Guitar Hero: World Tour’s 16 shared songs match up to one another, look no further than YouTube. While there are certainly others (and undoubtedly more to follow suit), user Gurra100 has a playlist of comparison videos (embedded after the break). Everything we’ve seen so far looks unsurprisingly identical (update: scratch that, we just watched “Go Your Own Way” — not so identical at all).

Take note how GH:WT handles a Rock Band 2 set — namely, it’s scaled down to a 4-pad note chart. According to some on the Rock Band forums, trying to play the 5-pad variant with a RB2 set plus cymbal pack leads to glitches.

Meanwhile, our Instrument Compatibility Matrix has been updated to version 3.33 and we’re still working to fill in all the missing pieces; we’ve reached out to Activision and Harmonix for help.

Xbox 360 sales predicted to surpass original Xbox by month’s end

November 16, 2008

According to Mindy Mount, Microsoft CFO of the Entertainment and Devices Division, the Xbox 360 is about to surpass the original Xbox’s install base sometime this month. The original Xbox was able to sell around 25 million units during its rather short five year life-cycle, which the 360 would be able to do in about three years.

Mount also mentioned that the nearing 25 million install base is “only a start”, pointing out that cheaper hardware prices over time dramatically increase hardware sales. As is evident by the $199 Arcade’s influence in recent NPD figures. We’ll go on to predict a 40 million Xbox 360 install base by the time Microsoft retires our white wonder. Write that down and see how accurate we were come 2012.

Finally, Zapper heads to Xbox Originals

November 15, 2008

Filed under: News, Xbox Live Marketplace

We know, we know. It’s kind of hard to keep reading this when you know that Zapper is headed to Xbox Originals. Stay with us though, because the game isn’t actually available yet, so you can’t run off to download it anyway. No, the game won’t actually be available on the service until November 17, at which point we envision all of the world’s social interaction and commerce will cease — apart from the large influx of MS Point buys — throwing the global economy into a tailspin. Deliveries will stop, utilities will shut down, but no one will care. We’ll all be mesmerized by the awesomeness that is Zapper, and we will play until the electricity fails. As Zapper constantly prods the pleasure nodes in our brains, we will slowly, blissfully succumb to starvation.

Either that or Zapper’s release will slip by totally unnoticed, one of the two.

Although we’ve pretty much unofficially known since August, Sony’s VP of Sales, Ian Jackson, confirmed that the PS3 keypad will make its way to retail during the first week of December. The peripheral is currently listed for the rather outrageous disagreeable price of $50.

Bolt demo lights up the Live Marketplace

November 15, 2008

Filed under: News, Xbox Live Marketplace

Ready for download off the Xbox Live Marketplace is a new 818MB Disney’s Bolt game demo. Feel the excitement

For the uninformed, Bolt is yet another video game based on a motion picture by the same name that features a dog named Bolt (voiced by one John Travolta) who truly believes he’s a super hero dog. But no matter how good the motion picture might sound, the game will probably be trash thanks to long held tradition of movie based games turning out to be utter crud. That stated, we love the movie’s hamster character named Rhino. Just watch the embedded video and you’ll see why.
