Ninja Blade demo to land on Japanese XBLM soon

January 2, 2009

A picture is worth a thousand words but a demo could mean the difference in millions. From Software’s upcoming ninja-blade-ing (not a real word) game, creatively named Ninja Blade, will see early life on the Japanese Xbox Live Marketplace in the form of a playable demo. Japanese gamers, and possibly others who have access to the Japanese Marketplace, will be treated to the demo on December 29.

Ninja Blade demo on the internet, plays nice with all systems

January 1, 2009

Remember a few days ago when we said the Ninja Blade demo would make its way to the Japanese Marketplace We’re not saying we’re magic or anything but as Picard would say, “Make it so.” According to Major Nelson the Japan-only demo is now available on the JXBLM. For those keen on checking out the ninja-action, comments on Major’s post claim the demo is both region-free and includes English text.

Earlier in the month Japan was rewarded with an exclusive Resident Evil 5 demo that was originally region-free. Soon after realizing non-Japanese gamers had been downloading and playing the demo, new downloads of the demo outside of Japan were blocked and the on the internet co-op was disabled. So, let’s keep news about Ninja Blade on the DL okay That means don’t tell anyone you’re downloading it and please do not post this information on the web. Oh, wait. Crap.

Resident Evil 5 Demo graphical comparison called in favor of the Xbox 360

January 1, 2009

Filed under: News, Resident Evil 5

Resident Evil 5 is going to look fantastic no matter where you play it but when the two console demos are put head-to-head, which one do you think has the graphical edge You guessed it, it’s the Xbox 360.

Dot50Cal over at The-Horror.com put together a fantastic gallery of screen shots from both versions of the demo. While both look great, Dot50Cal notes that the Xbox 360 version appears to be a few builds ahead of the PS3; shadows and sharpness appear to be the major difference. But don’t go too crazy X-heads, these comparisons are based on a demo and not the final game and some only show very small differences. Check out Dot50Cal’s images for a closer look.

Jump in for another shot showcasing very small differences.

What does it cost to keep EA at bay

December 31, 2008

In order to keep out of EA’s portfolio Take-Two Interactive spent nearly $11.1 million, according to Security and Exchange Commission filings submitted by the Grand Theft Auto IV publisher. In a seven-month-long period Electronic Arts attempted to buy Take-Two Interactive by way of initial offering and then by bidding directly to shareholders. After numerous delayed deadlines, Electronic Arts finally canceled its quest to buy the company who owns such high-profile studios as 2K Boston, developers of BioShock. Gamespot reports that Take-Two incurred the costs during the “strategic review process” of the EA offer.

This day, Take-Two Interactive remains an independent company but shareholders are probably grinding their teeth about its current financial situation. At the height of buyout speaks, EA was offering $25.74 per share but Take-Two rejected the offer, now the company currently trades at $8 per share … but that probably has a lot to do with this whole economic crisis thing.

Matthews: Ports and expansions contributed to loss of FEAR fans

December 30, 2008

Monolith’s Dave Matthews, lead art designer for F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin, states multiple expansions and console ports have likely cost the shooter franchise some fans. In an interview with CVG a comment was made to Matthews that the TimeGate developed expansions and Day 1 Studios developed console-ports of the critically acclaimed shooter could be responsible for bringing new eyes to the horror-fueled FPS. “And killed off a few,” Matthews noted.

Matthews primary reason for the comment based on story decisions taken once the series was out of Monolith’s hands. “[TimeGate] took the story in a direction that we didn’t intend … We look at Extraction Point and Perseus Mandate as an alternate universe,” Matthews told CVG. F.E.A.R. was about Alma, F.E.A.R. 2 is about Alma, and we wanted to continue the story the way we originally intended.”

This time around Monolith, who gained Xbox 360 experience from the Condemned series, has committed to develop all three version of the upcoming sequel. “While there will be some slight variations between the different versions … our main goal is to make sure the experience is synonymous across all three platforms.”

Grab a hanky, ‘Cry On’ canceled

December 29, 2008

The Xbox 360 has no shortage of role-playing games these days but the Western console has just lost a promised Japanese release. On Christmas Day, AQ Interactive revealed Cry On, the action role-playing game from character designer Kimihiko Fujisaka, has been canceled due to, “the current market environment and forecasts for the future.”

A joint venture between Cavia and Hironobu Sakaguchi’s Mistwalker, Cry On would have been the third title from the famed Japanese creator; Mistwalker previously worked on Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey. A representative for AQ Interactive told 1UP that the studio “deeply apologize[s] for troubling those who were awaiting its release.” No screen shots of the game had ever been released since the game had first been announced in 2005. Down and out for now, but something tells us Sakaguchi isn’t hanging up the gloves anytime soon.
