British Lord to Be Prosecuted for Causing Fatal Accident by Texting

Lord Ahmed, a Labour celebration member in the British House of Lords, will be prosecuted for causing a fatal accident last year, allegedly while texting, Textually.org notes.

On Christmas of last year, Ahmed called paramedics on his cell phone shortly after the wreck in which the other driver died immediately. Authorities later discovered that a text message had been sent from that same cell phone, just prior to accident.

As ‘texting while driving’ becomes increasingly common, the news of this trial comes at a time rife with stories of text-message-induced traffic accidents, including a texting teen who was struck by a train last year, and the implementation of anti-texting laws by federal and state governments. Tabula Rasa shutting down on Feb. 28

We kind of knew that Tabula Rasa’s run wasn’t going to end all that well. And it will end … on Feb. 28, 2009. This comes after months of reports concerning the NCsoft MMO’s poor performance and, most recently, the departure of creator Richard Garriot.

The news of Tabula Rasa’s impending shuttering came this day via the game’s community site, with the team issuing a formal “Thank you and farewell” message to players. “The development team has worked hard to improve the game since launch, but the game never reached the player population we hoped for,” the statement reads. “So it is with regret that we must announce that Tabula Rasa will end live service on February 28, 2009.”

Tabula Rasa will be free-to-play beginning Jan. 10, 2009, through the day its servers power down. Subscribers to the game will be given a parting gift from NCsoft to the tune of three free months of City of Heroes, Lineage II, and access to the Aion beta when it becomes available (plus a free month of Aion once it’s released).

Samsung Omnia For Verizon

Apple Co-Founder Stars In Kinda Funny Outerwear Webisodes

After enjoying a lucrative career after co-founding Apple with Steve Jobs, Steve “The Woz” Wozniak can do whatever he wants. He’s dated Kathy Griffin (to each, their own), played on a Segway polo team, and is now starring in a collection of on the web ads for a clothing company.

The commercials are for SCOTTEVEST, which designs clothes with numerous pockets and one-of-a-kind features to incorporate gadgets, so it’s no wonder they’d go with someone like Woz. Two of the ‘Woz-i-sodes’ are up now, featuring the corpulent computer man in a ‘Star Wars‘ spoof and fishing video where he uses an iPod nano for a lure.

JHU researchers create self-assembling organic wires

Once more it looks like Johns Hopkins has taken humanity a step closer to full-blown Borg-hood. A research team at the school has created water-soluble electronic materials that spontaneously assemble themselves into wires some 10,000 times smaller than a human hair, for potential uses that include regulating cell-to-cell communication, re-engineering neural networks, repairing damaged spinal cords and transforming individuals into cybernetically enhanced drones. The researchers also point out that the self-assembly principles used to create the nano-scale wires are based on those of beta-amyloid plaques (which have been associated with Alzheimers), so the research might someday lead to a better understanding of the disease. This is definitely good news, but we can’t help but think that once we’ve been assimilated into the hive mind Alzheimer’s will be the least of our concerns.

Lionhead’s not so ‘big’ Fable II update

Last week, Lionhead revealed that a BIG Fable II announcement would be coming this week. Well, their plans didn’t work out as expected and the BIG announcement has been delayed until next Monday, November 24th. Reason being that Microsoft decided this week wouldn’t be the ideal time to announce BIG Fable II news, probably due to the whole New Xbox Experience release n’ such.

There you have it, kids, a BIG Fable II announcement will be headed our way next Monday. We plomise!

Google Brings LIFE Magazine Pic Archives to the Web

Google continues its march towards organizing all the world’s information. Just what has it done this time Google worked with LIFE magazine to digitize and distribute LIFE’s enormous archive of photographs, which span over a century and countless cultural, political, scientific sporting, and other historical moments.

Since this was released, we’ve spent far too much time browsing the archives, and we’ve found everything from Hitchcock to Billie Holiday, from ‘The Third Man’ to ‘2001,’ and the historic Lindbergh flight to the Apollo 11 launch. The majority of the pics have titles, descriptions, photographer information, and dates, which makes searching for pics from “World War 2″ and “New York,” for example, surprisingly easy. You can search by decade, by year, and by pretty much any other search term you can think of. Paul Newman Check. Dresden, Germany Got it. Picasso wearing a cow’s head mask Of course!
